Wanda Colburn, age 57 of Guin, Alabama passed away Thursday, March 1, 2007 in the North Mississippi Medical Center in Hamilton, AL.

Services held Saturday, March 3, 2007 at 11:00 am from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mt. Willing Cemetery. Bro. Randy Wright officiating. Visitation Friday 6 - 8 pm at the funeral home.

She was born in Marion County, Alabama, the Daughter of the late Claudie and Evelyn McDonald Colburn. She had lived in Guin all of her life and was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

She is Survived by a Sister, Carolyn (Price) Pearce of Guin, AL, A Uncle, Ned (Etoil) McDonald, Sr. of Guin, AL, A Aunt, Sally Bostick of Hamilton, AL, Cousin Merline and Tommy Nix of Hamilton, AL and several other cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Theodore and Nucie McDonald; and a Sister, Mary Katherine Colburn.

James Allen “Jimmy” Pope, age 47 of Winfield, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2007 in the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. Jimmy was born on March 29, 1959 in San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America a son of R. R. “Dick” Pope and Faye Galbreath Pope; resident of Winfield since 1962; 1977 Graduate of Winfield High School; a Welder by trade; and a member of Winfield First Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dewitt Pope.

Survivors include one son, Joshua C. Pope of Winfield; mother, Faye Galbreath Pope of Winfield; three brothers, Richard R. (Anne) Pope Jr. of Winfield, Steve (Dawn) Pope of Franklin, TN and Rick (Janet) Pope of Northport; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bobby Joe “Jody” Miller, age 28 of Hackleburg, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007 in the Marion Regional Medical Center at Hamilton as a result of an automobile accident. Jody was born on June 30, 1978 in Marion Co. a son of Robert Harold “Bobby” Miller and Martha Mae McKay Miller; he was a resident of Hamilton but was residing in Hackleburg the past several months; he attended Marion County High School at Guin; he was currently employed with Tim Cantrell doing Farm Work; previously employed with Cooper Insulation at Hamilton; and he attended Beaverton Church of God.

He was preceded in death by a son, Eli Miller; step-brother, Jerry White; grandmothers, Betty Miller and Wanda Miles; grandfathers, Wilburn Miller and Elmer McKay.

Whenever you pass his house, just smile because you know he would be either sitting under the tree or on the front porch waving and nodding or even napping.

Charles "Buddy"Weeks passed away on March 14, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Long-time business owner of Northwest Alabama Heating and Cooling, he installed and repaired systems for homes and businesses all over the Hamilton and Marion County area.

Born on February 18, 1935, he was the son of John T. and Hattie Weeks of Winfield, AL.

Funeral Services giving thanks for his life, rather than mourning his death were held at the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 16, 2007. Officiating minister was Dr. Dan Duncan, pastor of Fulton Bridge Baptist Church. Others who paid tribute were brother-in-law Jim Davis, and long-time friend and employee, Thomas Roden. The service fittingly concluded with Duane Hughes' reading of "A Hunter's Prayer" by Paul Meek. Music was provided by Barbara Miller and Jack Blalock. Pall bearers were Coy Cox, Jim Davis, Jr., Ricky Irvin, Carl Lucas, Olen Miles, Gary Mixon, Sonny Nix, and Danny Pittman. Burial followed in Fulton Bridge Cemetery in Hamilton.

Mr. Charles Hammitte, age 77, of Hamilton, Alabama passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Marion Regional Nursing Home in Hamilton, Alabama.

Mr. Hammitte was born in Kentucky on March 10, 1930, the son of the late Sherman and Bessie Hodge Hammitte and was married to Mabel Turner Hammitte. He was a highly decorated soldier and earned a Bronze Star in the Korean War. He was, by trade, a Machine Operator.

MILLER, Horace B. "H. B.", age 66, died Friday, March 2, 2007at 6:45AM at Jackson Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Miller was a native of Hamilton, AL and a resident of Montgomery, AL. Mr. Miller was a captain with the Alabama State Troopers, retiring after 33 years of service and was a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Almon and Della Miller; brother, Bill Miller; and a son Ken Miller.

Survivors in­clude his wife, Dorothy Miller; one son, Tim (Becky) Miller, both of Montgomery, and their children, Marla, Maegan, Almon and Luke Miller. Also survived by Ken Miller's children, Corporal Brian Miller, Amber Lynn Miller and PV#2 Jeff Miller, U. S. Army.

Adis Mae Riggins age 82 of Guin, AL died Friday, March 23, 2007 in the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL.

She was born in Smithville, MS. to the late Benny Lee and Ella Mae Beek Riggins and the wife of the late Henry B. Riggins. She had lived in Guin most of her life and was a member of the New Hope Church Of Christ. She had worked for Reltoc for over 20 years.

Dewey Colley age 87 of Guin, AL died Thursday, March 22, 2007 in the Oak Tree Plantation Assisted Living Center in Amory, MS.

Born in Haleyville, AL. He is the Son of the late Jessie Vernon and Della Parrish Colley. He had lived in Guin since 1943 and was a member of the Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He was a Free Will Baptist Minister and had been preaching for 55 years. He also was a Veteran of World War II having served in the US Navy.

Born in Lamar County to the late Demp and Edna Earl Ray Loggains and the Wife of the late Wayne Allison. She was a graduate of Sulligent High School and Baylor University where she received a degree as a Register Nurse Anesthetist. She retired from the Lamar County Hospital after twenty-five years of Service. She was a member of the Sulligent United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star also the Ladies VFW Auxiliary.

Frances Eulean Webb Castergine, age 74, of Elberta, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

She was the daughter of the late Abraham Lincoln and Ellie Mae Chaffin Kimbrell. She was the past Queen of the Floppy Moxies Chapter of the Red Hat Society, a past chair person of the House Committee of the Elks Lodge in Foley, Alabama, an active member of the American Legion of Pensacola and the Lillian Community Club and she was involved with raising money for veterans groups in the area.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Webb Knowlton, Elberta, AL, Brenda Webb Pearce, Birmingham, AL, and Pat Webb Spiller, Winfield, AL; sons, Curtis Webb and Tony Webb, both of Elberta, AL; brothers, Thomas Wayne and W.R. Kimbrell, both of Brilliant, AL; sisters, Jeweldean Hulsey, Hamilton, AL and Sue Rogers, Haleyville, AL; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

CULBERTSON, RICHARD, age 69, of Gattman, MS, formerly of Belflower, CA, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Culbertson was born April 29, 1937, in Whitmire, S.C., he was the son of the late Clyde Alvin and Rosa Marcelle Clevland Culbertson. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hamilton, AL. He served in the U.S. Navy and owned Culbertson and Associates, where he was a data base programmer.

Survivors include his wife - Virginia Culbertson; son - Richard Gene (Julie) Culbertson, Costa Mesa, Calif.; daughters - Jennifer Lynne Culbertson, Santa Monica, Calif., and Kathy Marcelle (Matthew) Evans, Belflower, Calif.; and grandchildren - Kimberly and Samuel Culbertson.

Mildred Nadine Strickland, 93, of Huntsville passed away Thursday, March 2, 2007, following a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. She was fortunate to have enjoyed excellent mental and physical health until her recent illness.

Nadine was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Kansas, Walker County, to the late Oscar and Pinkie Tidwell. She graduated from Carbon Hill High School and married Carter Bartly Strickland of Carbon Hill on February 17, 1934, a marriage that lasted 66 years. She lived most of her life in Carbon Hill and Jasper. Over the years, Nadine and Carter regularly participated in gospel singings, where they both sang while she played piano. In addition, she taught piano lessons for a number of years. They experienced various opportunities to become professional singers but opted simply to enjoy music as a reward in itself while bringing pleasure and solace to others. Some may also remember Nadine as an Avon representative while living in Jasper; she worked in this field for more than 20 years. She moved to Huntsville in 2002, following the death of Carter to live near her two daughters.

She is survived by her daughters, Doris Strickland Cline and Mary Ann Grainger of Huntsville; her son, James Carter Strickland of Conyers, Ga.; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by two brothers, Morris Everett Tidwell of Carbon Hill, and Paul Eugene Tidwell of Kodak, Tenn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Bobo of Carbon Hill, and Mary Lois Smith of Palm Beach, Fla.; her grandson, Douglas Wilson Cline; and great-grandson, Matthew Carter Cline. Six surviving grandchildren are Carter Ray Cline and family of Fredericksburg, Va.; Dana Nadine Rich and family of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Charles Edward Grainger Jr. and family of Prattville, Guy Bartly Grainger of Huntsville, James Dale Strickland of Centerton, Ark., and Deborah Elizabeth Strickland and family of Conyers.

Visitation will be at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The funeral service will be at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, near Carbon Hill, at 11 a.m. Saturday with burial in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the start of services.

Ms. Brasher was born July 27, 1947, in Marion County, to the late Nola Rachel Voce Perry. She graduated in 1965 from Brilliant High School in Brilliant Alabama. She was the wife of the late William "Bill" Brasher.

Dean was a strong Christian and a long time member of Huffman Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL and more recently of First Baptist Church of Hamilton, AL. He was a lifetime Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Division Director. He was a devoted spouse and loving father of one son. Dean graduated from Hamilton High School and received his Associates Degree in Business Administration from Massey Business College, Birmingham, AL. He is a veteran of World War II. He retired from McWane Case Iron Pipe Co. as a supervisor and later was superintendent of Oak Hills Memorial Cemetery for many years.

Dean was preceded in death by his son Ricky Dean Woodham; his parents, Rev. Leland Woodham and Ollie Mae Franks Woodham; brother, Vaudrey Woodham; sisters, Verdilee Parker and Dorothy Hutchinson.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Cason Woodham and many nieces and nephews, and his dear friends of 56 years, Glen and Willene Clark.

Retired State Game Warden, Everett “Tid” Tidwell, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at his residence.

Funeral will be Wednesday, March 28 at 2 p.m. from the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Harris officiating. Music will be orchestrated by Angie Kelly and Kim Millican. Graveside service will be at the Liberty Missionary Baptist Cemetery in Detroit, Ala.

Mr. Tidwell was born July 27, 1930 to the late Pinkney and Ida Carter Tidwell in Hamilton, Ala. Mr. Tidwell’s life was spent in service of his country, his community, his home and his family beginning with his service in the U.S. Army and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Tidwell worked for 30 years for the State of Alabama. He began his career with the Department of Corrections as a Kilby Prison guard. He continued from there to Livingston, Ala. where he served as a book keeper with the Department of Corrections.

From there he went to Jackson County where he was involved with the first refuge management areas of Skyline Wildlife. He moved to Lamar County in 1964 as a state game warden where he served his community until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Tidwell enjoyed his many years of service here in Lamar County and loved and respected everyone in his community and was beloved by many. He was a lifetime member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, a 50 year Mason, Boy Scouts of America Volunteer and member of the State Police Association.

ROBERT LEE COUCH, SR., was promoted to glory on his 87th birthday, March 29,2007.

He was a veteran of World War II. He served with the Army Air Corps, 433 Group, 67th Troop Carrier Squadron, as a medic and saw duty in the Southwest Pacific theatre including New Guinea, Northern Solomon Islands, The Philippines, Bismarck Islands and others. He was one of those special people that are sometimes referred to as the "Greatest Generation" and he served honorably to protect our nation. After military service, he graduated from the University of Alabama with a major in Accounting. He was employed by the U. S. Government for 30 years and subsequently worked with the State of Alabama for five years.

He was a native of Winfield, Alabama and was preceded in death by his parents, Alec and Jeffie Couch, four brothers (Raymond, Delmas, Mack, and Tom), and two sisters (Helen Couch, Merle Couch Yates).

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Westbrook Couch; three sons, Robert Jr. (Kay) of Tucson, AZ., Michael (Karen), and Ken (Carol) of Birmingham; Grandchildren Leigh Kennedy (Patrick), Amiee Couch, Kimberly Couch, Noel Couch (Mindy); One Great-granddaughter, McKenzie Couch, One brother, Alec, Jr.; seven sisters, Jean Moore, Naomi Waldrop, Ola Nail, Lillian Langston, Dorothy Smith, Erin Burleson, Martha Mims; many nieces and nephews.

Robert is loved by many friends and family members, who were his greatest joys and sense of accomplishment. He accepted Christ as his Savior after WWII, and spent the remainder of his life supporting the cause of Christ. He served the Lord with his financial talents, and also as a Sunday school teacher. He was a charter member of the Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL and most recently is a member of Huffman Baptist Church. He is a member of the Harvester Sunday School class. He leaves a long legacy of service to our Lord.

PRITCHETT, RACHEL NADINE BURLEY, age 78, of Homewood, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2007.

She was born in 1929 in Cameron, WV and attended Cameron Elementary and High School, class of 1948. Mrs. Pritchett graduated from Ashland College, Ashland, OH, in 1952 and received a Bachelors Degree in Music. She taught music in Ohio and Texas schools before moving to Alabama. She married L. D. Pritchett, Hamilton, AL in 1964. Mrs. Pritchett was a life-time member of the Living Church of God, formerly the Worldwide Church of God. Mr. and Mrs. Pritchett lived in Hamilton, Alabama, and she taught music at Belgreen School, as well as, private piano lessons to students from Hamilton, Haleyville, and Phil Campbell. In Hamilton and after moving to Homewood, she and her husband owned and operated Pritchett's Piano Sales and Service for 30 years, while she continued teaching private music lessons. She sang with the Birmingham Concert Chorale for several years and took private voice lessons from Evelyn Beasley Errolle, director of Errolle Studio of Voice and Opera. Mrs. Pritchett was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, L. D. Pritchett; her father, John Earl Burley; and mother, Bertha Bell Simmons of Cameron, WV. She is survived by nieces by marriage, Patricia F. Ryan (David) of Birmingham and Judy P. Danford (Bob) of Castle Rock, CO; sisters-in law, Grace Pritchett Farr of Hamilton, Luna Hudson of Jasper, and Flara V. Webb of Gardendale, brothers-in law, J.C. Pritchett (Willa Dean), Eugene Pritchett (Jean), Sterling Pritchett (Frankie) all of Forestdale, and R. C. Pritchett of Cahaba Heights; and a host of nieces and nephews by marriage.

THOMAS GREENE WALKER, SR., age 80, of Hoover, passed away at a local hospital on Saturday, March 3, 2007, surrounded by his beloved family.

He was born July 23, 1926, in Bankston, AL, the son of the late Ernest F. Walker, Sr. and Mary Melinda Martin Walker. He was a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, and a greatly beloved "Paw" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his cherished wife of 61 years, Faye Braswell Walker. Thomas and Faye Walker were blessed to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a trip to Virginia and Washington with their children. He is survived by his children, daughter Brenda Marie Walker Cash (Gilbert) of Concord, AL and son Thomas G. Walker, Jr. (Betty) of Montevallo, AL; by his grandchildren: Brandon Joseph Cash (Amy) of Louisville, KY, Melinda Quackenbush (Charlie), Justin Cash, Matt Walker (Elizabeth) of Montgomery, Jane Walker, and Jeff Walker; and by his great-grandchildren: Rebecca Cash, Zachary Cash, Caitie Childers, Ashley Childers, Brynley Quackenbush, and Matthew Cash. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest F. Walker Jr., (Cora) of Homossassa, FL, and his sister Evelyn W. Raper of Hamilton, AL, and brothers-in-law James B. Braswell, Luther J. Braswell, and Earnest L. Braswell (Shirley), and by a host of other loving family members and dear friends.

Following in the footsteps of his own father who served as a rural mail carrier, Mr. Walker was a dedicated civil servant, retiring as a superintendent from the United States Post Office after a career of 42 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a dedicated Friend of the American Village and its Colonial Chapel, a member of Post 134 (Homewood) of the American Legion, the Sons of the American Revolution, Caledonian Society of Alabama, Hoover Historical Society, Friends of Hoover Library, Arlington Historical Association, Birmingham Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, and other organizations. He was a rock of quiet strength, Christian faith, good humor, support and love to his wife Faye and to his entire family. The family publicly expresses great thanksgiving to God for the life of this good man.

Margie Othelia Camp, 82, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, at the Community Hospice House in Verona after a long illness. Mr. Thomas Paul Jones Jr., age 93 of Winfield, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2007 in the Northwest Medical Center at Winfield.

Mr. Jones was born on December 18, 1913 in Atlanta, GA a son of Thomas Paul Jones Sr. and Lucille Lynn Jones; moved to Winfield in 1927; resided and worked as a Crane Operator for Continental Steel in Kokomo, IN for 18 years before returning to Winfield in 1969; was a Barber until retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Pearlie Weeks Jones; and a brother, Raymond Jones.

He was a resident of Winfield area most of his life; Graduate of Marion County High School and Florida Barber and Beauty College at Jacksonville, FL; retired in 1985 from the City Barber Shop as Co-Owner with 37 years of service; WWII US Army Veteran; member of American Legion Post 100 at Winfield; and a member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church having served as Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer.
