Ms. Margie Lee Gay

Margie Lee Markham Gay, age 86 of Hamilton, Alabama, passed away January 13, 2010 at Merrill Gardens Assisted Living, Florence, AL.

Visitation, Sunday, January 17, 2010, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Elkins East Chapel in Center Star and Monday, January 18, 2010, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home. Funeral service, Tuesday, January 19, 2010, 2:00 p.m., Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

(Obituary written by the family and supplied by Hamilton Funeral Home, Hamilton, AL.)

Ms. Margie Lee Markham Gay was born June 21, 1923 in Lamar County, Alabama, the eldest child of Lewis A. and Gertie Bell Dill Markham. She was a resident of Marion County, Alabama until the Spring of 2002. At that time, she suffered a stroke and moved to Florence, Alabama to live at Merrill Gardens Assisted Living Facility.

While at Merrill Gardens, she was active in various activities and made many new friends. A surprise party was held in honor of her 80th birthday in the summer of 2003. In the Fall of 2009, her health began to decline and she went to live at Glenwood Healthcare in Florence. It was there that the Lord called her home Wednesday, January 13, 2010.

Mrs. Margie chose nursing as her career and spent many years caring for others. She was working at Hamilton Hospital when she met Coy Gay. They married on February 24, 1962 and she was by his side when he passed away on May 1, 1997.

Through the years, Mrs. Margie's greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren, Lori and Jim. They enjoyed eating her scrambled egg sandwiches and fried apple pies almost as much as she enjoyed making them. She would share stories of her childhood and of special times with her "Grandma Dill".

But nothing would lift her spirits as spending time with her great-grandsons. David and Joshua. They were the center of her world. Her face would light up a room whenever they were around her.

Mrs. Margie touched the life of any whose path she crossed. She was loved by all who were blessed to know her. The greatest love came from Lori and Jim. They laughed with her, cried with her, and cared for her in her last years. Life will never be the same without her.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Lori Hill Brocato (Danny) of Florence and Major Jim Hill (Tanya), great-grandchildren, David and Joshua Hill, of Ft. Riley, Kansas, brothers, Middleton Markham (Tommy Lou) and Carroll Markham (Hazel) of Brilliant and sister, Genevieve (Joe) Langley of Winfield, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy, parents, Lewis A. and Gertie Bell Dill Markham, Leon Markham, and nephews Ricky Markham and Randall Markham.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Merrill Gardens for the care and love extended to Mrs. Margie for the past eight years. You were an extension of our family. We would also like to thank the staff at Glenwood Rehabilitation and Glenwood Nursing Home for providing excellent care and a loving and comfortable environment for Granny in her last days. You will always have a special place in our hearts. And a very special thank you to Dr. Robert Webb for your knowledge, guidance, patience, and most of all, your concern for Granny. We were truly blessed to have you as her doctor. We would also like to thank Randy Jackson and the staff at Hamilton Funeral Home for your assistance.

Visitation for Mrs. Margie will be Sunday, January 17, 2010, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Elkins East Chapel in Center Star and Monday, January 18, 2010 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. She will be laid to rest next to Coy at Memorial Gardens in Hamilton.

Hamilton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
