Charlie E. Otts, age 89, of Sulligent, AL died Thursday, February 1, 2007 at the Marion Regional Medical Center in Hamilton, AL.

Born in Lamar County to the late Posie and Avie Lockhart Otts and the husband of the late Lucile Williams Otts. He was a life long resident of Lamar County and a member of the DePriest Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He was a farmer for many years and had worked and retired from Hyster Company from the Assembly Department.

Survived by Four Daughters: Avie Lou ( J. B.) Heard of Gattman, MS, Emma Jane Jackson and Mildred (Jack) Lowery all of Sulligent, AL and Hilda Nolen of Hamilton, AL, Two Sons: Earlie (Glennice) Otts of Vernon, AL and Jerry (Sandra) Otts of Sulligent, AL, Three Sisters: Christine Johnson of Yazoo City, MS, Lelia Belle Smith of Arkansas, Dovie Mae Edwards of Amory, MS, Three Brothers; Manuel Otts of Birmingham, AL, A. W. Otts of Texas, and Tommy (Jewel) Otts of Sulligent, AL, Nineteen Grandchildren, Twenty Three Great Grandchildren, and Two Great – Great Grandchildren. One Step Son: Tommy (Ninnie) Robertson of Guin, AL and One Step Daughter: Annette Bobo of Guin, AL.

Preceded in death by his Parents, Wife: Lucile Williams Otts, Second Wife: Rosa Otts, a Daughter: Kathleen Lee, a Grandson: Wayne Lee.

Services held Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Bro. Bill Duncan and Bro. Whalon Jones officiating.

Billy Ray Johnson, age 62, of Eldridge, Alabama, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2007 in the Northwest Medical Center at Winfield, Alabama.

Mr. Johnson was born on May 13, 1944 in Fayette County, AL. to William David and Lula Mae Tucker Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of the Pleasant Grove Church area in Fayette County. He retired from Gus Early Lumber Co. in Carbon Hill due to ill health.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Larry Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Deloria Estell Johnson of Eldridge; 2 brothers, Gary "Rod" Johnson of Carbon Hill and Earl Wayne Johnson of Eldridge; 2 sisters, Bobbie Nell Tidwell of Eldridge and Patricia Ann Ingle of Nauvoo; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bro. Millard Lofton, age 85, of Mantachie, Mississippi passed away Saturday, February 3, 2007 at his home in Mooreville, MS.

He was born to Roy and Vertie Mae Lofton on August 18, 1921 in Lee County, MS. He met and married Elizabeth Fox of Tupelo, MS April 6, 1940. He was a minister for the Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Mooreville, two daughters, Deborah Wiley of Bartlett, TN, Betty Miller of Mooreville MS, one son, Jimmy Lofton of Birmingham, AL, one brother, Roy Lofton of Mooreville, MS, three sisters, Opal Williams of Quitman, MS, Beverly Steen of Kosciusko, MS, Margaret Parker of Jackson, MS, nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Lofton and Freddie Lofton, one grandson, Phillip Dover and 3 brothers.

Jerry Randall Vaughn, age 44 of Winfield, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at his residence.

Jerry was born April 7, 1962 in Marion County a son of Shirley (Al) Dozier. He was a lifelong resident of the Winfield area (White Springs Community). He retired from truck driving due to ill health from K & E Trucking at Glen Allen. He had previously been employed with Quantam Construction. He was a member of NRA and North American Hunting Club.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ector and Pauline Hallmark and Estelle Vaughn.

In addition to his mother, Jerry is survived by his wife, Gale Buchanan Vaughn; two daughters, Brandy Vaughn of Fayette and Keri Vaughn of Winfield; two granddaughters, Rhiannon Vaughn and Brynzley Meeks; a grandfather, Orville Vaughn of Winfield; three brothers, James T. “Tim” Vaughn of Glen Allen, Jeff (Sandra) Vaughn of Winfield, and Rodney (Dusti) Vaughn of Carbon Hill; two sisters, Vickie Vaughn of Texas and Cindy (Brandon) Aaron of Dora; and five nieces and nephews, Colby Vaughn, Jasha Vaughn, McKayla Vaughn, Ashton Vaughn, and Jackson Aaron.

Mrs. Ballard was born on August 25, 1926 in Fayette Co. a daughter of Thomas Andrew and Chessie Atkinson Webster; resident of Bobo Community most of her life; currently a resident of Winfield; graduate of Hubbertville High School and Florence Teacher’s College; retired from Reltoc Mfg; widow of Daniel Ballard; member of White Springs United Methodist Church; and her hobby was antiques.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, J.E., Fred, Ed and Claude Webster; and a grandson, Jonathon Wade Ballard.

Mr. Samprice Harper Sr., age 72 of Brilliant, passed away Monday, February 5, 2007 in Hackleburg. Mr. Harper was born on November 8, 1934 in Walker Co. a son of Charles Grant “C.G.” Harper and Bernice Stubblefield Harper; previous resident of Farmstead; resident of Marion County since 1980; most of his younger life he was a Boilermaker with Chicago Bridge and Iron then became a self-employed crane operator for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Sam (Cindy) Harper Jr. of Pinson and Robert Harper of Florida; one daughter, Peggy Milam of Trussville; five grandchildren, Amanda Harper, Anna Harper, Butch Beste, Andy Milam and Cody Harper; nieces, nephews and other relatives; the family wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation to all his special friends and caregivers.

Audrey "Epp" Duncan, age 90, of Sulligent, Alabama passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007, at McCafferty Home in Carrollton, AL.

Services were Tuesday, February 13, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Otts Funeral Home in Sulligent with the Rev. Danny Stanford officiating. Burial followed at Webb Cemetery in Lamar County, AL.

Mr. Duncan was born March 20, 1916, in Lamar County, Alabama to the late Ben and Rosie Webb Duncan. He was a Baptist and worked as a farmer and saw miller. He sent the last 14 years at McCafferty Home in Carrollton, Alabama.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, David, Earnest, Ganer Lee, and Cordie Duncan and 4 sisters, Evie Duncan Hawkins, Lou Anna Duncan, Lois Duncan and Velma Vanderford.

Guy Hardin Mills, age 79, of Hamilton, Alabama passed away at his home, Saturday, February 17, 2007, after a lengthy illness.

Guy was born in Lee County, Mississippi on Wednesday, March 9, 1927 to William Riley and Reamon Watson Mills. He taught school in Marion County for 34 years. He loved to farm and it was said by his wife, Bernice, that he taught school to pay for his Tractor. He was a member for more than 27 years and served as Clerk for Webb Baptist Church in Lamar, County, AL. Guy met Bernice Webb who was, like him, from the Byrd Community near Hamilton, Alabama. They married November 19, 1949. Guy had his schooling interrupted by WWII as did many his age. Upon returning to the States, after serving his Country in the United States Army in WWII as a rifleman, he continued his education at Itawamba Junior College in Fulton, MS. and he graduated The University of Mississippi at Oxford, MS. He was an "Ole Miss" fan the rest of his days and loved to watch their Football games on television.

Visitation will be 1:30 - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2007, with the Funeral Services to be at 4:00 p.m. at the Marion County Funeral Home, East Hwy. 278, Hamilton, AL. Burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Gu-Win, AL.

Mr. Walker was born in Marion County, Alabama on July 7, 1937, to Willie E. and Clessie Burleson Walker. He was the owner of Walker's Appliance Service. He leaves behind his widow, Barbara Ann Grier Walker. He was a Veteran and served in the United States Navy.

THE REVEREND ALFRED TILLMAN SPROUSE, 88, died February 19, 2007.

Born in Melbourne, Al., he was educated in the public schools of Lamar County, at Birmingham-Southern College, and at the Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University. He held a Doctor of Divinity degree from Athens College. Over the course of his ministry, he served at First Methodist Church in Attalla, Al.; First Methodist Church in Jasper; First Methodist Church in Florence; Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville; Central Park United Methodist Church in Birmingham; Trinity United Methodist Church in Tuscaloosa; and as district superintendent in Gadsden.

He also served on a wide range of boards and commissions within the Methodist Church. He organized the first Television Radio and Film Commission, serving as the commission's first chairman. He served 15 years as the Clerical Member of the World Methodist Conference, traveling extensively. He helped to organize the Association of Retired Ministers and Spouses of the North Alabama Conference, which included 425 members originally; he later spent 10 years as president of the association. He was elected as a delegate to the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in the United Methodist Church in 1956 and again in 1960.

After one of his sermons was printed in Jasper's Daily Mountain Eagle, the World Travel Bureau invited him to tour post-WWII Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. He was chosen for a private audience with Pope Pius XII, and the Pope granted him permission to hold the first Protestant worship service in the ruins of the Roman Coliseum. He visited with Muhammad Naguib, the president of Egypt, and was invited to lunch by General Anwar Al Sadat, who would later become the third president of Egypt. He sat down with Syrian dictator Adib Shishakli and was entertained by both David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel and by King Talal and Crown Prince Hussein in Amman, Transjordan.

He held two George Washington Honor Medals from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, given in recognition of his efforts to bring about a better understanding of the American way of life. He opened the 82nd Congress with prayer in answer to an invitation by the Chaplain of the House of Representatives. He was Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Alabama of Free and Accepted Masons and was appointed Ambassador to the King Solomon Lodge in Old Jerusalem. He retired in June 1983 from Roanoke First United Methodist Church and had spent the last five years at Fair Haven United Methodist Retirement Home in Birmingham.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Anne Sparks, and by his two sons, Billy (Sandy) of Birmingham, and Timothy (Rosalie) of Philadelphia, Pa. He has five grandchildren-Richard, Sean, William, Michael, and Rosalie Anne-as well as three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Canterbury United Methodist Church, with Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m.

WATERS, GLADYS OWENS, of Rocky Ridge Retirement Community, Hoover, AL, died February 20, 2007, at age 96.

Born in Haleyville, Alabama, she lived most of her life in Birmingham and was married to Jim H. Waters, Sr., for 54 years before his death in 1986. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esley and Etta Owens and sister, Opal Owens Holland. She was a member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church after being an active member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church for most of her life. She was a member of the Fairfield Garden Club and the Veleda Literary Club, and served in PTAs of her children's schools for many years. She attended Athens College and used skills learned in Home Economics for a productive life as a homemaker.

She is survived by sons, Jim H. Waters, Jr. (Sue), Birmingham, AL and Kenneth L. Waters (Judy), Sandy Hook, Connecticut; and daughters Gloria W. Woods (Jim), Hoover, AL and Janice W. Lowe (Dr. Richard), Haleyville, AL. Also missing their "Lollie" will be grandchildren Bradley Waters, Birmingham, AL; Kim Woods Nolen (Ken), Birmingham, AL; Kerri Woods Breeding (Marve), Hoover, AL; Keith Woods (Roslyn), Vestavia Hills, AL; Steve Adams (Kathy), Kingston Springs, TN; Brian Adams (Karen), Daphne, AL; Amy Lowe Sansom (Brian), Nashville, TN: Niki Waters Erb (Chris), Plainsboro, NJ; and Aaron Waters (Karina); Santa Clara, CA; 21 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by one sister, Eileen Swanberg, Albuquerque, NM.

Mrs. Gertie Belle Benton Jones, 97, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Guin, Alabama.

Born in Hatley, Mississippi in 1909, she was the daughter of John Anderson Benton and Ella Franks Benton. Married in 1926 to John Henry Jones (1901-1985). They had six children: Mary Faye (Middleton) Motes of Belle Glade, Florida; Margie Raye (Allen) Palmateer (1929-1999) of Guin, Alabama; John Edward (Doris) Jones of Hodgenville, Kentucky; Sarah Luella (Lee) Cooper of Hamilton, Alabama; George Henry (Virginia) Jones (1938-2004) of Prattville, Alabama; and Donald Arthur (Gwyneth) Jones of Guin, Alabama.

Preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, she is survived by a brother, Lawrence Benton of Hubbertville, Alabama, four children, ten grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren.

Mrs. Jones lived in Guin all of her married life. She was a member of the Guin First Baptist Church, and enjoyed quilting and crossword puzzles as hobbies.

Anna Laura Akers, age 78, of Fultondale, Alabama, formerly of Guin, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, in Birmingham, AL.

Anna Laura was born in Alabama to the late Largus and Maggie Ramey Akers, Sr.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Guin City Cemetery. Bro. Art Rowe was the officiating minister.

Survivors include her sister, Lillie Mae Akers of Fultondale, AL; a brother, Largus M. Akers, Jr. of McCalla, AL; 2 nephews, Ross (Candace) Akers of Chelsea, AL and Stan Akers of McCalla, AL; and 1 great-niece, Amanda Akers of Chelsea, AL.

Mr. Charles Terry Kilgore, age 66 of Winfield, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2007 in the DCH Regional Medical Center at Tuscaloosa. Mr. Kilgore was born on April 12, 1940 in Fayette Co. a son of Charles Terry Kilgore Sr. and Autie Lee Hubbert Kilgore; resident of Fayette most of his life; resident of Winfield past several years; graduate of Fayette County High School; previously employed with Hightower Trucking in Winfield, Newman Trucking in Belk and Estes Electric in Winfield; US Air Force Veteran; and a member of Unity Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dayna Collins Bagwell; a grandson, Jason Martin Edgil; and a brother, Bud Kilgore.

Survivors include his wife, Banks Estes Kilgore of Winfield; five sons, Tim (Sandi) Estes of Cottondale, Larry Estes, Roger (Charlene) Estes, Vince Estes and Charles (Sharon) Kilgore, all of Winfield; two daughters, Linda Newman of Cottondale and Donna (James) Smith of Winfield; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ted (Margaret) Kilgore of Huntsville; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home. Venlon Bradford was the officiating minister. Burial followed in West Alabama Memorial Gardens, Gu-Win.

Allen Jr., Mr. J.C., age 80 a resident of Deatsville, Al. went home to be with the Lord on Monday February 26, 2007. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 27,2007 at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Brookside Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. with a graveside service at Cooper Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamilton, Al. The Rev. Les R. Snodgrass and Rev. Walter Acre will officiate.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his son Bobby Ray Allen. Mr. Allen served as a minister in the Church of God for 20 years. He pastored in the Prattville and Montgomery areas.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63years Essie L. Allen of Deatsville, Al., daughter Glenda Freeman (Ronnie) of Deatsville, Al., sons Jim L. Allen (Susan) of Wetumpka, AL., Dr. Stephen E. Allen (Ann Marie) of Tuscaloosa, Al., David C. Allen (Angel) of Wetumpka, AL., sister Opal Sullins (Jimmy) of Hamilton, AL., brother Claude Allen (Mazie) of Detroit, Al., sister in law Lois Allen of Sulligent, Al., 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Music for the service will be performed by Ronnie & Leslie Freeman.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ronnie Freeman, Jr., Jon Freeman, Matt Freeman, Rusty Allen, Jacob Allen, Andrew Allen and Jody Upchurch. The family will receive friends on Tuesday February 27,2007 from 6-8 p.m. at the funer­al home.

Velma Elizabeth Tryan Fallin -DOUGLAS - Mrs. Velma Elizabeth Tryan Fallin, age 78, of Douglas, GA, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Fallin, a native of Grady County, Georgia, was born April 3, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Fred Z. and Mary Castleberry Tryan. She was a homemaker and a Para-Professional with the public School System. Her church membership was at the First Baptist Church in Douglas, GA.

Survivors: Husband, Aubrey Emmitt Fallin; Daughter, Linda Fallin Whipple, Macon, GA; Sons, Kenneth A. Fallin, New York, NY and Ted E. Fallin, Hamilton, AL; Sisters, Mildred Anderson and Evelyn Bracewell, Thomasville, GA, Doris Cassidy, Marietta, GA; Brother, George Tryan, Savannah, GA; Grandchildren, Chanlor Whipple, Taylor Whipple, Metts Whipple, Jennife Fallin, Natalie Fallin, Mallory Fallin and Jay Fallin.

Funeral Services will be held 2P.M., Saturday, February 10, 2007 at The First Baptist Church with Rev. Shep Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Satilla Gardens Cemetery.
