ABERDEEN, MS - Lois Flonoy Guthery, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at her home after several months illness. She was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Marion County, Ala., to the late Carl and Ellis Spruiell Ballard. She lived in the Splunge community for many years. She attended Monroe County schools. She was a member of Splunge Baptist Church. She married Johnnie Leon Guthery in 1941; he died in 1984. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, and caring for and giving to others. She touched the lives of many and helped and gave to them in a special way.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Louis Coker and Bro. Mac Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Lann Cemetery.

Homer Bishop, age 59 of Winfield, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2007 in the Northwest Medical Center at Winfield.

Homer was born on March 20, 1948 in Steele, Missouri a son of William Porter and Vister Dobbs Bishop; became a resident of Marked Tree, Arkansas where he entered the US Army having served in Vietnam and Korea; after overseas duty, returned to Winfield as was a member of Alabama National Guard 877th Engineering; retired from Bishop Joint Sealing; and attended Apostolic Revival Church at Winfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; two half-sisters; one half-brother; and two step-brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Textor of Winfield; two sons, David (Rachel) Bishop of Columbus, MS and Rogar (Amanda A.) Lena E. Holcomb Stanford, age 92 of Winfield, died Friday December 7, 2007 at Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.

Ms. Stanford was born January 25, 1915, in Tuscaloosa Co., to Curtis and Ola Mae Cole Holcomb. She retired as a nurse at Loretta Hospital in Chicago, IL, but was a resident of Brilliant most of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Brownsfield; three brothers, Berly, Travis, and Herbert Holcomb; and a sister, Irene Van Geertson.

She is survived by two sons, Carl (Evelyn) Stanford and Wesley Stanford, Sr. both of Brilliant; three daughters, Christine McGough of Michigan, Tiny Farrell of Brilliant, and Marie (Johnny) Brokema of Chicago, IL; a brother, Frank Holcomb of North Carolina; numerous grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Michael Wates, age 57, of Guin, Alabama, died Thursday, December 13, 2007 in the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Guin, AL.

Born in Winfield, Alabama, he is the son of Etna Faye Franks Wates and the late Carlos Qudell Wates. He had lived in the Pea Ridge Community most of his life and was a member of the Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 21 years. He was also a member of the Pea Ridge Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Fleeta Cantrell Wates of Guin, AL.; two sons, Phillip (Sabrina) Wates and Richard Wates, all of Guin, AL.; his mother, Etna Faye Franks Wates of Guin, AL.; and 4 grandchildren, Garrett, Mary Beth, Peyton, and Kailee Wates.

Born in Hamilton, Alabama, he is the son of the late George and Jane Evans Miles and the husband of the late Ella Luevadie Green Miles. He had lived in Guin and Hamilton most of his life and was a member of the Mt. Willing Free Will Baptist Church.

VINA, Ala. – Telmar Scott, 88, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at Marion Regional Medical Center in Hamilton, Ala. He was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Alabama to Tom and Allie Overton Scott. He was a disabled U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Vina, Ala.

Karr, J. T., age 82, of Birmingham, AL, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 18, 2007.

J.T. Karr was born in Sulligent, AL on December 28, 1924, the son of George Hamp and Izy Rye Karr. J.T. served in the United States Air Force during World War II and during the Korean War. He was retired from East Lake Auto Parts after 25 years of service. He was a member since 1955 of Roebuck Park Baptist Chruch, now NorthPark Baptist Church.

J.T. is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mrs. Stella Karr; his two children, Johnny Karr (Debbie), Donna Cantrell (Tim); four grandchildren, Lindie Jean Wynn (Shane), Jason Karr (Melinda), Kyle Landers and Justin Karr; and a host of family and friends. KITCHENS, CHARLENE EDWARDS Charlene passed quietly away on December 17, 2007.

Charlene was originally from Sulligent, Alabama, where she met and married her late husband John. They relocated to Birmingham and lived happily together for 64 years. Charlene was preceded in death by her oldest son John, Jr., and is survived by her children, Sylvia (John), Bobbie (Jack), Steve (Karen) and daughter-in-law, Dianne; her grandchildren, Shane, Jennifer (Anthony), Rebekah, Jessica, Sunny, Sky, Chrys; and her great grandchildren, Christian, Caleb, Jake and Teresa. Charlene was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and was a life long Methodist serving in numerous ways throughout the years. As her children were growing up she served as a youth leader, youth Sunday School teacher, choir director and was the church pianist. At Woodlawn Methodist she served as an adult Sunday School teacher, played the piano for several different classes and supported the Church in many different roles. She was always an enthusiastic member of United Methodist Women and never wanted to miss a meeting. In her own words: "The United Methodist Church has provided me the freedom to interpret the will of God in my life in an individual and unique way. My support and loyalty to my Church is next to my loyalty to God." Her faith was exceptional and she set an example for her own family and for many others. Charlene was retired from Jefferson County and served her last years in the Sheriff's Department.

Mrs. Flora Mae Warren Smith, age 90 of Winfield, passed away Monday, December 10, 2007 in the Golden Living Center at Winfield.

Mrs. Smith was born on September 17, 1917 in Marion Co. a daughter of Walter Terrel and Tennie Virginia Weeks Warren; lifelong resident of Marion Co. in the Winfield area; retired from Brilliant Mfg; widow of Haskel Smith who died in 1971; she loved to travel with her friends; her church affiliation was Free Will Baptist and she attended Fairview United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne and Ellis Smith; and two brothers, Hollie and Grady Warren.

LOVELADY, HERMAN, HALL, 93, Formerly Of Birmingham And More Recently Hanceville, Died Sunday Night, December 9, 2007 In Hanceville.

Private Burial Will Take Place Beside The Grave Of Herman's Wife Of 53 Years.

Herman was born on Nov. 4, 1914, in Winston County to J. I. (Joe) and Emma Alice Lovelady. The farm family reared 10 children, three sons and seven daughters. Herman and wife Lola Mae, married in 1933, had two daughters, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Herman liked to boast that in Lola Mae Clark he had married the prettiest girl in Winston County. Like many of their time and place, the couple started out poor in the midst of the Great Depression but improved their lot over the years with hard work and frugality. Early on, Herman took what employment he could find, sawmilling, road-building or farming. In 1938, he and Lola bought on credit an 80-acre Winston County farm and an old house. They paid off the note with proceeds from cotton they planted, hoed, picked and hauled to town. As their situation improved, they were able in 1948 to build a new house on the farm from lumber Herman had sawn, including heart pine for studs and interior paneling. Their main focus was the rearing and education of their daughters, both of whom became nurses and raised families. In 1957, Herman moved his family to Birmingham, where he had found work with a manufacturer of lumber-processing machinery. This job took him to faraway places like Quebec where he repaired chippers and debarkers. Long after retirement he could still recall how to order two eggs, well done, in the French language prevalent in Quebec. Lola died in 1989. Herman often said that his greatest wish was to join Lola in Heaven, if the Lord is ready. Herman was a member of Hilldale Baptist Church, where he sang in the senior choir.

Surviving are a sister, Gladys Taylor of Decatur; daughter, Doris Glover and her husband, Glyn of Hanceville; daughter, Jackie Lott and her husband, Bob of Waco, Texas; grandchildren, Mike Glover of Houston, Scott Glover and wife, Sharon of Atlanta, Sam Lott of Azle, Texas, Tim Lott and wife Becky of Austin, Texas, Dan Lott of Austin; and great-grandchildren Pamela and Brandon Glover, Garnet and Glyn Glover, Christopher Allison, Seth Lott and Annie Lott.

The family would like to recognize Lester Tidwell, Herman's Sunday School teacher who was like a brother; Valeria Brownlow, who knew Herman since childhood and called him daily during his declining years; Gail Matthews, a neighbor who looked after Papa with tender care; and Hilldale Baptist Church, which embraced him through the church family. It also offers special thanks to Hanceville Nursing Home, whose staff members cared for Herman as lovingly as they would have their own grandfathers.

Jason Eric Flynn (lovingly known as “The Flynn”), age 35 of Jasper, died Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Baptist Medical Center – Princeton.

Jason was born January 23, 1972 in Winfield, Marion County, Alabama and a 1990 graduate of Brilliant High School. He attended Bevill State in Fayette and a graduate of the Atlanta Art Institute. He had been a resident of Jasper for the last several years where he managed Cobb Theatres #4.

Jason is survived by his mother, Judy Corkren (Danny) Burnett of Winfield; a brother, Christopher Shane (Lisa) Flynn of Winfield; his grandparents, Harold Corkren of Winfield and L. G. and Audra Flynn of Guin; a niece, Iviekate Flynn; and two nephews, Dillion and Cody Horne.

Jason was preceded in death by his grandmother, Uwanna Corkren.

Lula Jennette (Nettie) Weeks, 85, Beaverton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the family residence in Winfield.

Born in Lamar County, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Laura Theola Lindsey O ’Mary. She was of the Free Will Baptist faith. She was a resident of Sulligent most of her life. She was retired from the McCoy Manufacturing Plant as an inspector.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Willie Rasberry, Lavada Humbers, and Robbie Carruth; and brothers, Roy and Coy O ’Mary.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Bro. Kenneth Humbers was the officiating minister.

Her passions were her family, living on the lake, being around people, music, dance, making others happy, working in her garden and making warm, happy memories.

Ms. Patterson was born October 13, 1926 in Fayette County to James Andrew and Lena Estelle Musgrove Patterson. She was a resident of the Glen Allen area most of her life where she was a member of Glen Allen United Methodist Church. She was a 1934 graduate of Winfield High School and assisted her brother, Edwin at Patterson Distributing Co. in Winfield for several years.

Mary Lou Elliott, 83, Sulligent, passed away on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at Northwest Medical Center in Winfield.

Born on Feb. 22, 1924, in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late James Marion and Nona Tidwell Eads. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sulligent Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her by husband, Edison Emmanuel Elliott; daughter, Wanda June Elliott; brother, Clymon Eads; daughter-in-law, Patsy Eads; and son-in-law, Roy Blaylock.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at 11 a.m. from the Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Union Chapel Cemetery in Winfield. Bro. Lynn Godsey was the officiating minister.

Survivors include her sons - Jerry (Karrie) Eads, Tuscaloosa, and Edison “Buddy” (Barbara) Elliott, Vernon; daughters - Brenda (Bobby) Bowles, Fayette, Teresia Fay Blaylock and Betty Elliott, both of Sulligent, and Glenda (Dennis) Tidwell, Eldridge; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Polly Ann Bishop Craig, 47, Fayette, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, in the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

Born on Oct. 12, 1960, in Poinsett County, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Charles Melton and Lena Lela Marcum Bishop. She has been a resident of Fayette for 17 years. She was currently employed at Best Glove Manufacturing Co. in Fayette. She was previously employed with Dollar General in Fayette and as a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes in Alabama and Arkansas. She was a member of the Fayette Church of Nazarene.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home in Winfield. Bro. Don Elledge was the officiating minister.

Survivors include her husband - Calvin Craig; sons - Lee (Tabitha) Davis, Bankston, and Devin Davis and Timothy Craig, both of Fayette; daughters - Nina (Jerrick) Brown, Fayette, and Ashley Paige Frederick, Hamilton; grandchildren - Jacob and Layla Minor; brothers - Tommy Bishop, Marked Tree, Ark. and Matthew Bishop, Osceola, Ark.; sisters - Melena Barnett, Osceola, Ark., Melinda Martin, Kieser, Ark., and Julie Earnest, Pocahontas, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mrs. Dolores Cobb Beasley, age 61 of Winfield, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2007 at her residence.

Mrs. Beasley was born on June 30, 1946 in Jefferson Co. a daughter of Hank and Wynelle Forrester Cobb; resident of Birmingham most of her life; resident of Winfield since 1981; graduate of West End High School in Birmingham; attended one year of College there; member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church; and she was a avid football fan and enjoyed writing poetry.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, John Beasley of Winfield; three sons, Ricky Beasley of Winfield, Tommy Beasley of Auburn and David Beasley of Fayette; one daughter, Bonnie Grindle of Wetumpka; two grandchildren, Zachary Ryan Grindle and Isabelle Grace Beasley; mother, Wynelle Cobb of Leeds; one brother, Wayne Cobb of Florence; two sisters, Yolanda Graves of Leeds and Darlene Skinner of Moody; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral Services were held Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 2:00 PM from the McGraw Memorial Chapel of Miles Funeral Home. Clayton O’Mary was the officiating minister. Burial followed in the Winfield City Cemetery with Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directing the service.

Roger Clay Guin, a businessman who during his fifty-two year career owned and operated various businesses in Winfield and Guin, including a cattle farm, an automotive dealership, a BBQ restaurant, and multiple commercial real estate properties, died December 22nd, 2007 at his home in Winfield. He was 71.

Mr. Guin was born in Guin, AL on September 22, 1936, and resided in the Guin and Winfield areas for his entire life. He graduated from WInfield High School in 1955, and attended the University of Alabama until he returned home to work in his father's meat packing plant and livestock auction, the Clay Guin Packing CO.

In 1958, Mr. Guin ventured into the automotive business with the formation of 3G Car Center, owned by him, his father, and brother. Subsequently, he became a used car buyer for the former Birmingham automobile dealership, Doug Willy Pontiac. In 1966, Mr. Guin purchased a Standard Oil full-service gas station in downtown Winfield, formed the Roger Guin Car Co. at the same location and operated both businesses until 1977 when he purchased the local Oldsmobile dealership and formed Regency Oldsmobile, Inc. The local Chevrolet dealership was then purchased by Mr. Guin in 1982 forming the Regency Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Inc. which he owned and operated until his retirement from the automotive business in 1998. Mr. Guin then converted his former downtown automotive showroom into a restaurant, Car-Lot BBQ, a business which he and his wife operated until 2005 when the business was sold to his son Kyle, the current owner and operator,

Mr. Guin served in the U.S. Army National Guard from November, 1958 until November 1964. He was a Mason/Shriner, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winfield, and a member of the Alabama Automobile Dealers Association.

Mr. Guin was preceded in death by his father, Henry Clay Guin, his mother, Ima Lou Howe Guin, his brother, Ronald Gary Guin, and his granddaughter, Jessica Guin. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Faye Bostick Guin of Winfield, sons, Lt. Col. Philip Clay Guin (Sandy) of Clanton, Gregory Bostick Guin (Dawn) of Winfield, and Christopher Kyle Guin (Amy) of Winfield. He is also survived by his grandsons, Max, Caleb, Ramon, Josiah, Philip, Clay, Will, Gabe, Graham, and Gracen Guin, and his granddaughters, Diana, Megan, Mary, and Hannah Guin, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 4:00 PM from the Winfield First United Methodist Church. Gary Heathcock, Venlon Bradford, Charles Ballew, and William E. Atkinson were the officiating ministers. Burial followed in the Guin City Cemetery.

Stephen Dale “Steve” Dodd, age 56 of Winfield, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2007 at his residence.

Steve was born on March 22, 1951 in Winston Co. a son of Henry Audrice and Agnes Maud Johnston Dodd; resident of Winfield most of his life; Vietnam Veteran; previous employment consisted of Joint Sealing in Detroit, MI, Oil Drilling, Carpenter and Manufactured Housing in Guin; he was a member of Winfield Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Allen Dale Dodd; brother, Gary Audrice Dodd; and a nephew, Donnie Sims.

Survivors include one son, Gary Dale (Lila) Dodd of Haleyville; two grandsons, Jonas and Eli Dodd; mother, Agnes Johnston Dodd of Winfield; one brother, Donnie Dodd of Winfield; two sisters, Gail Hubbert of Winfield and Vicki Hegel of San Andreas, CA; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Reneé Cantrell age 30 of Sulligent, AL died Saturday December 22, 2007 at the Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL.

She was born in Birmingham, AL on February 22, 1977. She later became a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at a Day Care Center in Irondale, AL and later at the Cook Springs Nursing Home in Cook Springs, AL. After moving to the Sulligent Area she worked at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Guin, AL. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Arlene Vandeventer Brown, age 80, Brilliant, Alabama passed away Sunday, December 30, 2007 at her residence.

Ms. Brown was born February 27, 1927 in Rhode Island to the late Joseph and Helen Bryda Silva. She was a resident of Brilliant, AL. for the past 10 years and a prior resident of Winfield, AL. She owned and operated a floral design shop in Florence. She was retired from Ben Franklin Craft Store in Ocala, FL.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Vandeventer, and a sister, Eleanor A. Olivieria.

She is survived by her husband, Verbern R. Brown; 2 sons, Chris Vandeventer, of New Iberia, LA., and Don Vandeventer, of Lexington, OK.; 2 daughters, Laurie Vandeventer, of Dunnellon, FL., and Nancy Hutchinson, of Tuscumbia; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Cox was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sulligent, where she was a member of The Young at Hearts at the Church, a Sunday School teacher and Chair of the Special Need Committee. She enjoyed sewing and traveling.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Ella Ray Cox, Sulligent, AL; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleve and Carrie Harper Johnson; husband, Grady Cox; brothers, John R. Johnson, ED Johnson, and Lester Johnson; and her sister, Minnie Sandlin.
