How to Find Your Local Laws relating to companion animals?

Are you interested in reading your local laws relating to companion animals?  Find Your Local Ordinances  If you are interested in local animal control laws, you want to begin by reading your local ordinances. Many resources exist to help you find these ordinances.

P R I N T R E S O U R C E S

1. Clerk’s Office.
To find the text of ordinances currently in effect, check your county or city clerk’s office. You may have to go to the office in person to review them. Keep in mind that, although going to the office may take longer than using the other resources listed here, the clerk’s office should have the most up-to-date version of your local ordinances, which may not be true of the other resources.

2. Public Library.
Your second best source for finding current ordinances is your local public library. The reference librarian will help you locate them.

3. Law Library.
Your local courthouse may also have a library that you can use.

1. Many local governments post their ordinances on their website. To find links to such websites, try:
http://statelocalgov.net/index.cfm or http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S_States

2. Check whether your local shelter or Animal Control has a website, if it does, the local animal laws may be collected there.

3. Alternatively, there are online collections that contain the ordinances of many local governments, including:
http://www.spl.org/govpubs/municode.html or http://www.municode.com/index.asp

Tip: Even if you do not have a computer, your public library almost certainly has computers with internet access for its patrons.
