GET TOGETHER #270 OIL EM DON'T SPOIL EM

1Sa 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

We have just concluded one month of grand parenting. It has been very exciting in making this time of transition. It has brought back a lot of good memories of when our two children were infants. On the other hand I thought about how our priorities have changed since our children were born.

When our children were first born I thought about how I wanted them to grow up and have a lot of wealth. Wealth is not a bad thing, but wealth being a god or our first priority for ourselves or family is a bad thing. Then I thought about how when our children were little how to keep them happy at all times. Many of us tried to entertain them to keep them happy. Thankfully J.J. even before we came to the Lord had a better grip on this stuff than me. When our kids were seven and five J.J. and I made a commitment to the Lord and our worldview on rearing children really changed.

Good very well meaning Christians have told me about how good that it is to spoil their grandchildren. Last week the Lord gave me a word which is the title of this devotional this week: “oil em and don’t spoil them”. He told me to give Jessye that word. I take that word to mean get them into the things off God at an early age. We know that children have a spirit while they are in the womb. That spirit is assigned at conception: Jer 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."

A child’s spirit is fully capable of accepting the supernatural things that God desires to do in a child’s life. 1Ki 17:21,22 And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, I pray, let this child's soul come back to him. "Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.

So yesterday I got to act on the word that the Lord gave me for Jessye. She brought Judah by here for me to watch him while she went to Wal-Mart. Judah got oiled. I put a CD in the computer with some praise and worship and began to prophesy over him and pray over him. As Jessye came back in the door he was waving his arms and kicking his little feet with a little smile on his face. Pray that we oil him and don’t spoil him. I believe this will work better than singing our favorite football teams fight songs over them. How about you? Are you planning on oiling or spoiling your children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other young ones that God has put in your path? Or do you plan on letting God use you to oil them so that throughout life they will seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness? It is an eternal question with eternal and now ramifications.

Let Us Pray

Lord today help us to love children in a way that they experience love and not just stuff. Lord today I pray that You will help us to know when giving a gift is a good gift and how to give it. Most of all help us to teach them about the wonder of being anointed with Your Holy Spirit and loving and serving Jesus Christ.

In Jesus Name

Amen

I pray that God give all who need rest from your labor rest in order that you are reenergized to rejoin the battle for souls in the Kingdom of God . The Lord has told me that although this needs to continue to be a word of encouragement to remind everyone that we are to be an encouraged people because we are a committed people.
