Mrs. LaMerle Todd Mitchell, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2008, at D.C.H.
Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL. She was born September 22, 1930, in
Marion County, AL. to Joseph David Todd and Era Etta Rye Todd. She was a member
of First Baptist Church of Falkville and was preceded in death by two sisters,
Vernice Todd Terry and Jo Anne Todd Lawrence.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil Mitchell of Falkville, AL.; a son, Stanley
Cecil Mitchell of Town Creek, AL.; a daughter, Blenda Mitchell of Montgomery,
AL.; a sister, Joyce Anders (Gary) of Hartselle; four grandchildren, Brandon

Ms. Hollis was born June 6, 1924 in Lamar County, AL to the late Walter Alonzo
and Lucille Swan Edgeworth. She was a member of the Sulligent First Baptist
Church. Ms. Hollis attended Sulligent High School and had previously lived in
Ft. Worth, TX. She was co-owner of Robert Hollis Grocery for 17 years. Ms.
Hollis also worked as a teachers aide at Sulligent High School. She enjoyed
reading.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Francille (Vic) Hatchett, San Antonio, TX; and
Sylvia (Jerry) Barnett, Anthem, AZ; grandchildren, Brian (Jalessa) Hatchett,

Jasper Lee Martin, age 80, of Gardendale, Alabama, passed away surrounded by his
loving wife, devoted daughters, and sons-in-law on Sunday, January 6, 2008.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Martin; their four daughters,
Sandra (John) McCoy, Gardendale, Susan (Floy) Spencer, Alabaster, Deborah
(Robert) Barnwell, Kimberly, and Lisa (Steven) Reid, Dothan; their seven
grandchildren, Chris (Amy) McCoy, Tammy McCoy, Stephanie (Dave) Booth, Nicole
(Ron) Keel, Kirk (Hannah) Reid, Doug and Megan Barnwell; their three
great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kendall McCoy, and Jane Booth; and his siblings,
Rafford and James Martin, and Pernie Hood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Fannie Martin; his son,
Jasper Lee Martin, Jr., and his siblings, Charlie, Chester, and Roy Martin, Ina
Haynes, and Bertha Mann. Mr. Martin was an Army Veteran serving in Germany. He
was a member of Gardendale's First Baptist Church. During his retirement years,
he enjoyed gardening, tending his fish pond, and visiting with his family and
friends. He was a good man who loved his family and was loved by all who knew
him.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from
the graveside in Rock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Winston County.

Thomas
E. Jernigan, longtime business community leader, died January 4, 2008.
His career represents a remarkable American entrepreneurial success story. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marathon Corporation, he established one of the most successful privately owned companies in the state. A native of Atmore, later moving to Frisco City in Monroe County, Alabama, he grew up as a farm boy and attended local schools. After serving in the United States Air Force for 2 years during World War II, he moved to Birmingham and later attended The University of Alabama. He spent his adult life in Mountain Brook, raising his family and establishing himself as one of the leading figures in the business community. His business career began with the development of a line of children's playground equipment. He created Plantation Patterns, a manufacturer of wrought iron casual furniture. In 1969, he began United Chair Company, manufacturing office furniture. In 1973, he developed the concept of neighborhood convenience stores, founding and building several dozen Quick Marts.
He founded Winston
Furniture Company in Haleyville, Alabama in 1976, which became a nationwide
leader in the production of aluminum outdoor casual furniture. Marathon
Equipment Company, another of his business creations, became one of the
country's leading manufacturers of commercial and industrial compaction
equipment, with facilities in Alabama, New Mexico and Pennsylvania.
Mr. Jernigan was renowned for his civic and philanthropic accomplishments. He
established endowments at Birmingham Southern College, Samford University, The
University of Alabama, and The University of Alabama at Birmingham, which
provided scholarships for college and nursing students who would otherwise have
been unable to attend school. He funded medical research at local hospitals and
was a generous supporter of United Way, The Boys & Girls Clubs, The Boy Scouts
of America, Children's Hospital, The Salvation Army, The Alabama Symphony and
many other charities.
He was a member of the
Country Club of Birmingham, Shoal Creek Country Club, Elk River Country Club in
North Carolina and Indian River Country Club in Miami. He enjoyed socializing
with friends and colleagues among numerous groups including The Gravy Train,
ROMEOs, Rollers, Rotary Club, and YPO.
He was an original director of what became Compass Bankshares and served on the
Board of Trustees of Birmingham Southern College. He was also one of the
original investors of The Bank (now Superior Bank).
Mr. Jernigan is survived by his wife of 23 years, Donna Conyers Jernigan and
four children, Thomas E. Jernigan, Jr. (Elizabeth), Lisa Jernigan Bruhn (Tommy),
Mary Conyers Jernigan and Jonathan Winston Jernigan; five grandchildren,
Camille, Ella and Thomas Jernigan III, and Franklin and Drew Brown; a brother,
Carl Jernigan; and a sister, Loretta J. Goodwin.
He will be deeply missed by long-time friend and business associate, Mrs. Audrey
Wadleigh.
The Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 7, 2008, in the
sanctuary at Mountain Brook Baptist Church and the family will receive friends
in the church's Hudson Hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Manufacturing, Health-Tex, NAACO and Wal-Mart. She enjoyed reading, writing and
sewing.

Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, AL.
Born in Hartselle Alabama to the late David Maurice and Florence Greene Stewart
Winton. He served his country in WW II in the Navy and was a member of the
American Legion in Sulligent, AL. Mr. Winton was a member of the Sulligent
United Methodist Church and had owned and operated the Winton’s Pharmacy in
Sulligent for many years before retirement.
Survived by his Wife: Catherine S. Winton of Sulligent, AL, Three Daughters:
Marian Loftin and Susan Winton both of Mobile, AL and Mary Catherine Miller of
Colorado Springs, Colorado. Two Sons: Ralph Stewart Winton of Sulligent, AL and

60 - Sulligent, AL
Jerry "Mule" Myers age 60 of Sulligent, AL died Monday January 21, 2008 at
St. Vincent Hospital, Birmingham, AL.
Born in Detroit Alabama, he was the son of the late Robert Lee "Bobbie" Myers
and Llewellyn Knight Myers. He began his working career as a brick mason and was
an employee of NACCO for the past 24 years. Jerry could be found most evenings
at a local diner spending time with his life-long friends. They spent countless
hours reminiscing about old times and even creating some new ones along the way.
"Mule's" most beloved hobby was relaxing in the comfort of his horse drawn
wagon. He carried his team of horses to any event in which he could give someone
the enjoyment that he received from the peacefulness of wagon riding. He was an
avid fan of Sulligent Athletics. Throughout the years, he enjoyed watching
nieces, nephews, and other friends play at Sulligent High School. His support
was evident through his help with facility upgrades and numerous fundraising
activities. The legacy of Jerry "Mule" Myers will continue through his family,
friends, and most of all his smile.

Mr. John Tol Hankins, age 76, of Sulligent, AL, passed away Monday, January 28,
2008 at the residence.
Funeral services, 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2008, from the Shiloh Baptist
Church where the body will lie in state from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m.. Burial will
be in the adjoining cemetery. Officiating will be Bro. Glenn Boman and Bro.

p.m.
Mr. Hankins was born April 26, 1931 in Lamar County, Alabama to the late Henry
Albert and Effie Adiline Hankins. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.
Mr. Hankins was a 1950 graduate of Lamar County High School. He then worked as a
Millwright for 42 years. He was a member of the United Millwrights Association.
Mr. Hankins worked 22 years with International Multifoods and later for Con
Agra. He loved his job, traveling and family. He retired and returned to Lamar
County in 1993. Mr. Hankins met his wife Jeannie in 1995 and they were married
in 1997. He then spent a lot of time doing what he could not do when he had
worked. He farmed, fished and visited with the folks in the Shiloh Community. He
enjoyed working in his shop, watching his grandchildren play ball, Alabama
football and the Atlanta Braves baseball. Not a game went by without his
watching and reporting every play.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Hankins; 4 sons, Tol Ray ( Vikki) Hankins,
John Robert (Barbara) Hankins, Jeffrey Allan (Rhonda) Hankins, and Henry Albert
(Kathy) Hankins; 4 Daughters, Abby (Kristi) Hankins, Suzie (Clinton) Roberts,
Becky (Timothy) White, and Jessica (Jeremy) Turner; 31 grandchildren 7
great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Tom (Faye) Hankins; and a host of nieces and
nephews and other relatives.
Mr. Hankins was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Albert and Effie Adiline
Hankins; 1 brother, Bryce Hankins; 4 sisters, Mary Warren, Martha Warren, Alieen
Warren, and Grace Custard.

He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a United States Veteran. He was of the Methodist Faith.

Mrs. Gladys Wallace, age 48, of Red Bay, AL, formerly of Detroit, AL, passed
away Saturday, January 5, 2008 at her daughters residence. Funeral services will
be held Wednesday, January 9, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. from Otts Funeral Home Chapel,
with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Bro. Bill Marchbanks will be officiating.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 P.M.

White, Gary Wayne - Age 58 - Winfield, AL
Gary Wayne White, age 58 of Winfield, died Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Northwest Medical Center.
Mr. White was born March 16, 1949 in Jefferson County to Frank and Zola Olene
Cottingham White. He was a resident of Winfield and Eldridge most of his life.
He graduated from Hubbertville High School in 1967 and received his masters
degree from Southern Christian University in Montgomery. A former pastor, his
latest employment was as an over the road trucker. He was a member of Winfield
Church of Christ and the Car Nut Club.\
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry, Jack
Quinn, Carl White, Eual White, and Paul White.
He is survived by his son, James Michael White of Montgomery; his former wife,
Ann White; a brother, Jim Cottingham; and a sister, Willodean Albrecht of Greir,
SC.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 2:00 PM from the Winfield
Church of Christ where the body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. Burial
followed in Kelley Cemetery in Eldridge with James Wyers officiating.
